Solar Works for Washington

Washington has vast untapped solar potential—enough to put solar power on every roof on your block, on your office, atop your local schools, and on nearby businesses. However, right now, less than 1% of Washington’s energy comes from solar. We can do better. Environment Washington is working to install 150,000 solar roofs by 2020 in Washington. With this transition, we can generate clean, renewable energy to power our lives and repower our economy.

Program

Protect the San Juan Islands

Roughly 1,000 acres of spectacular lands in the San Juan Islands are not permanently protected. President Obama can protect these island landscapes by designating them as a national monument, but we need to rally massive public support.

Program

Protect the North Cascades

The North Cascades are one of the most rugged and wild places in the country: jagged peaks, old growth forests, and pristine wildlife habitat. This part of the state is precious, and it should always remain wild. However, much of the forest around North Cascades National Park is not protected from clear-cutting and mining. Environment Washington is working to protect 200,000 acres of forest and wildlife habitat that are currently unprotected.

Program

Keep Plastic Out of Puget Sound

Plastic pollution poses a serious threat to whales, seals, turtles, salmon and all of Puget Sound’s wildlife. We’re urging Washington's leaders to stop the flow of plastic into Puget Sound by banning disposable plastic bags.

Program

Getting Washington Off Oil

Imagine being able to drive a car that consumes no oil, produces no tailpipe pollution, keeps our air clean and protects our climate. This technology has arrived, but Washington is falling behind other states in putting clean, electric cars on the road. As we stall, the price of our oil addiction is taking its toll.

Fighting Global Warming

Too much of our energy comes from dirty sources that harm our environment. But by tapping the power of the sun and wind, and using less energy in the first place, we can repower our lives with clean energy that doesn’t pollute and never runs out.

Program

Defending Washington's Waters

Short-sighted legal decisions have left Puget Sound, the Columbia River and hundreds of acres of wetlands vulnerable to pollution and development. Now, polluters’ allies in Congress are trying to block the EPA from restoring vital safeguards. To protect Puget Sound and the rivers that feed it, we need to show massive public support for clean water.

Program

Clean Air, Healthy Families

Environment Washington’s research, advocacy, and action helped convince decision-makers in Olympia to set a shut-down date for TransAlta, the state's largest stationary source of air pollution. Still, much work remains to be done so that we can all breathe cleaner air.
