President Obama Announces Plans to Reduce Global Warming Emissions by 28% by 2020
Unveils Plans for 35 Federal Agencies to Lead on Clean Energy.
Today, President Obama unveiled the Federal government’s plan to reduce global warming emissions by 28% by 2020. Today’s announcement follows up on President Obama’s September 2009 Executive Order on Sustainability and includes the plans developed by all federal agencies to implement plans to reduce emissions by adopting measures; such as improving energy efficiency of buildings, installing renewable energy and improving the efficiency of their transportation fleets and the fuels that they use. Environment America’s Clean Energy Advocate, Sean Garren, issued the following statement:
“We commend the President for taking the lead in reducing global warming emissions and improving the financial and energy performance of our federal agencies. This commitment will ensure the federal government is leading the world in utilizing clean energy, reducing costs and increasing the energy independence of some of our most crucial operations.
“Fort Irwin in California is a prime example of the benefits of making this move to clean energy. The base is building the Defense Department’s largest solar installation, a 500 megawatt array, that will make it completely energy independent and therefore increasing security and economic stability.
“In leading by example, the Obama Administration will make the case that clean energy is as good for taxpayers as is it for the environment. Congress has the opportunity this year to pass along these same benefits to the American people by enacting comprehensive clean energy and global warming legislation.”
